A 19 year old girl hailing from Jalpaiguri district has been rescued from the red light area of Siliguri on Saturday night in a joint raid operation by Samuktala PS, Khalpara OP and Shakti Vahini, a national level anti trafficking organization.
Shakti Vahini received the information from MARG NGO that a girl was trafficked from her native village. As per the latest information she had been confined in a brothel in Khalpara. This information was followed by a telephone call from the Officer In-charge of Shamuktala Police Station for assistance in searching the girl. Shakti Vahini immediately contacted the Additional Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Commissionerate under whose leadership the victim was rescued.
During counselling the girl revealed that she fell in love with a man named Suraj Chatterjee, who first came in contact with the girl by making a phone call claiming to be a wrong number call. Gradually they became befriended and fell in love.on the day of her kidnapping Raju lured her to meet near Alipurdwar railway station from where they went to Coochbehar and stayed two days there. After a day Suraj introduced her with one Jhunu Mondal as his maternal aunt. Jhunu Mondol allegedly running the brothel in the Khalpara area.
“The Khalpara red light area has become a hub for the traffickers. The cases of reverse trafficking has also been reported recently in the Khalpara brothel. In a case Shakti Vahini along with Siliguri police rescued one girl trafficked from Delhi to Siliguri and was sold for Rs.70000” said Rishi Kant of Shakti Vahini.
Mr. Kant added “it is a clear case of human trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation which needs to be investigated. The matter needs to be investigated by the specialised unit the anti human trafficking unit”
After the rescue the girl was handed over to the Shamuktala Police in presence of her father and maternal uncle.
