A young woman allegedly sold off as “bride” to a man after being trafficked to Haryana from West Bengal via Delhi earlier this month was rescued from a village in Jind in a joint operation on Tuesday. The 24-year-old woman went missing from Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal earlier this month. Her relatives lodged a missing report with the area police station on September 8.
A few days later, the victim’s brother received a call from her stating that she was first taken to Delhi, from where she was sent to Jind in Haryana and sold off for Rs.50,000 to a 50-year-old man. The woman could not give details about
her exact location.
Acting on the tip-off, the local police contacted non-government organization Shakti Vahini seeking assistance. The NGO contacted Haryana Police, which conducted raids along with their West Bengal counterparts and rescued the victim.
She disclosed that a human trafficking agent named Raju had brought her to Delhi on the pretext of marriage and then sold her off to a man who forcibly married her. She was sexually abused and made to do household chores.
“The victim’s elder brother is in Jind to take her back home,” said an NGO representative.
